A US security consultant has used a security-testing tool to crack the iPhone. The exploit allows a hacker to control an iPhone remotely.
Farrow demonstrated how he used HD Moore’s Metasploit tool to gain root access to the iPhone and install an application that can record conversations on and near the iPhone, transforming the device into a spy tool. It also allowed him to remotely access recently modified files, locally stored emails and view the iPhone’s web-browsing history.
“Using a specially crafted web page utilising an iPhone exploit (now patched) he gained root level shell access to the phone — which means he could do anything that the iPhone is capable of from his laptop,” explained Jarno Niemelä, security researcher for the security vendor, F-Secure.
“This exploit actually involved you doing something with the iPhone, or in this case, I do something with the iPhone to get the exploit to work. This is not at all unusual. Most PCs are actually exploited because people visit a website and wind up being exploited,” Farrow told US business and technology publication, Fast Company. (more…)

In the latest of a series of complaints, iPhone users are reporting that sections of the screen go dead

Apple was today monitoring the latest mini-crisis to hit its much-hyped iPhone after some users began reporting that the touchscreen did not work.Threads on several Apple forums – including the company’s own – have been devoted to the problem, which causes parts of the device’s screen to go ‘dead’ and stop responding to the touch of a finger.
Typically the dead spot is a strip about half an inch wide that runs the width of the iPhone’s screen as it is held vertically, users experiencing the problem said.
In one case, the strip ran across the Unlock button, which meant that the user was unable to answer the phone when it rang.
“On the main screen, I can’t hit the button for clock, calculator, notes of settings,” ‘Gwas’, a user of the Apple-dedicated site Mac Rumors, wrote. “For text messages, I can’t hit the send button. On the phone keypad I can’t hit the 7, 8, or 9 keys.”
Another complainant wrote: “Now like 1/4 of the screen – starting from the bottom – doesn’t work.” (more…)

Only a few days after the iPhone went on sale, hackers were already kicking the wheels and checking under the hood to see if they could pimp out Apple’s locked-down smartphone. After a month, they’ve made surprising progress. Below, we detail some of the milestone hacks for what has been called “the most significant consumer electronics product ever.”

Most of the hacks that have been publicized so far are aimed at controlling or enhancing your own iPhone, but a darker side has emerged too. A security firm announced a possible Wi-Fi-based browser exploit, which could give hackers access to an iPhone’s microphone, surfing history and contact information — and possibly website and e-mail passwords stored on the phone, too. Make no mistake: The iPhone is a magnet for hackers, both good and bad. (more…)

July 24, 2007 (Computerworld) — The iPhone vulnerability that could let hackers steal data or commandeer the device also exists in the desktop edition of Apple Inc.’s Mac OS X operating system, the exploit’s researchers said today.

Charles Miller, one of the three researchers from Baltimore-based Independent Security Evaluators who found the bug and wrote proof-of-concept exploits, confirmed that the vulnerability in the iPhone version of Safari is also present in the desktop version of the browser. In a first peek behind the iPhone launch, AT&T Inc. said Tuesday that it activated 146,000 devices in the first two days of sales, which coincided with the last two days of its second quarter. Analysts had estimated that 200,000 to 500,000 of the highly anticipated Apple Inc. product would be sold in the first three days.

AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone, released quarterly financial results but would not reveal how many new devices were sold. It would only say that the iPhone had continued to sell well this month after the initial weekend frenzy at Apple and AT&T stores beginning June 29.Wall Street shaved 35 cents off its shares, which closed Tuesday at $39.68.

It has been said that ?where there is a will, there is a way.? That sentiment is well served by being applied to the purchasing of today?s cell phones and other electronic gadgets. The term techo-geek, short for Technology Geek, no longer applies to just the pocket protector using, braces wearing, non athletic, characters pictured in the TV shows and Movies. Now, this once derogatory term can be applied to the masses at large with no negative connotation whatsoever.

We all love our cell phones and PDAs and that love is only getting stronger as or lives demand our input in events at various locations simultaneously. As new technology provides more and more ?stay in touch capacity.? We quickly fill that capacity with a new task that we add to our list. Technology is only feeding the internal human desire to do as much as possible, as fast as possible, while on the move.

Apple’s iPhone will be available soon in stores and consumers are lining up to purchase the gadget. It looks like it’s going to be a Nintendo Vii big fuss kind of story. But there are some factors one should consider while waiting in the line in order to buy this device.

First of all is the price: The iPhone will cost about $499 for the 4-gigabyte model, and $599 for the 8-gigabyte version and that’s only the gadget. You’ll have to take in consideration a service plan as well. AT&T, the carrier Apple chose to work with, announced that its iPhone service plans will start at $59.99 a month, with a minimum two-year contract. You’ll have to pay a $36 activation fee as well and if you have to switch service providers, you may also have to pay an early-termination fee.
