Apple seems set to gain yet more market share on strength of continued increases in the company’s laptop sales, a research company has claimed.

Citing a report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times, DigiTimes reveals research from Taiwan’s Topology Research which claims Apple will see volume sales climb 30 per cent year-on-year in 2008.

This is likely to translate into a one percentage point addition to Mac marketshare in 2008, the report indicates. It predicts 116 million laptops (from all vendors) will ship next year, up from 93 million units in 2007.

The report notes that component shortages seem to have impacted 2007’s laptop sales, which would have been higher if such parts had been more readily available.

The good news doesn’t end there. Research from NPD reveals Apple’s iPhone has grabbed over a quarter of the US smartphone market since the device launched in July. (more…)

unlocking iphoneSeveral groups have now said that they have software ready that robustly unlocks the Apple iPhone and enables users to use the iPhone on other carriers. One of these groups now apparently (there are some doubts, as lawyers like to send written things first) got a call from AT&T lawyers reports Engadget.

This will become a very interesting development. First I am a bit surprised that AT&T gets involved first and not Apple. Considering the revenue share deals Apple is supposed to have made with European carriers, unlocked iPhones would put Apple in a weak position. (more…)

With the Uber successful launch of Apples iPhone, companies, design houses and indie developers have been scrambling to find a way to keep up with the direction Apple iPhone has pushed the mobile industry, which is towards rich media end-user experiences. Till now, mobile applications were good if they had some graphics and a midi player. Even phones like the blackberry and the treo have survived without giving very much in terms of bells and whistles for the in-hand experience. Now with the over the top response to iPhone, mobile publishers are looking to offer some fun on the handset making the simple use of the application an activity to enjoy along with the experience of the actual service. In the latest of a series of complaints, iPhone users are reporting that sections of the screen go dead

iPhone complaints

Apple was today monitoring the latest mini-crisis to hit its much-hyped iPhone after some users began reporting that the touchscreen did not work.Threads on several Apple forums – including the company’s own – have been devoted to the problem, which causes parts of the device’s screen to go ‘dead’ and stop responding to the touch of a finger.

Typically the dead spot is a strip about half an inch wide that runs the width of the iPhone’s screen as it is held vertically, users experiencing the problem said.

In one case, the strip ran across the Unlock button, which meant that the user was unable to answer the phone when it rang.

“On the main screen, I can’t hit the button for clock, calculator, notes of settings,” ‘Gwas’, a user of the Apple-dedicated site Mac Rumors, wrote. “For text messages, I can’t hit the send button. On the phone keypad I can’t hit the 7, 8, or 9 keys.”

Another complainant wrote: “Now like 1/4 of the screen – starting from the bottom – doesn’t work.” (more…)

Only a few days after the iPhone went on sale, hackers were already kicking the wheels and checking under the hood to see if they could pimp out Apple’s locked-down smartphone. After a month, they’ve made surprising progress. Below, we detail some of the milestone hacks for what has been called “the most significant consumer electronics product ever.”

Nine Hack That Will Make You The Master Of Your iPhone

Most of the hacks that have been publicized so far are aimed at controlling or enhancing your own iPhone, but a darker side has emerged too. A security firm announced a possible Wi-Fi-based browser exploit, which could give hackers access to an iPhone’s microphone, surfing history and contact information — and possibly website and e-mail passwords stored on the phone, too. Make no mistake: The iPhone is a magnet for hackers, both good and bad. (more…)
